Thanks for your interest in the Hi Line.
Original Numbers for the GP-35's were to be #100 & #101.
They were to be delivered in basic gloss black. In the event the
N&W merger did not go thru, the Rook Shops most likely, to place only
a stenciled Logo & Number under the cab window & maybe P&WV
on the long hood. (....as were the FM's) in the chrome yellow & graphics style.

....use the Hi Line BB. for all questions, We (JR-JZ-JAYROD)
check the board & site every day, and reply/post when we can help.

follow up....
Extensive search(s) thru the vast P&WV archives materials
by several P&WV aficionado's and quite a bit of first-hand
conversations with past employees, all point to these:

no firm graphic layout/design ID was ever drawn-up or sent to
GM. Speculation on a N&W merger was now a mute point.
At the time the AFE was
submitted July 10, 1964 it was simply a matter of when.

Based on Rook Car-Shop information during that time frame(GP-35 purchase)
only day-to-day work "as needed "was the order of the day.

The main job was now gathering -up all the materials /information on
all the P&WV current assets and sending these to the N&W folks who requested all Co. info.

.. a bit of speculation & conjecture on our part as to "what might have
been", is based on all the above.

Thanks for the quick and informative responses you've given me on this subject. I had no idea that the P&WV did a repaint of one of an H20-44 just a month before the merger. That photo is rare and very helpful to what I was looking for all along. I know that the GP-35s would've been in black but would the units have that same yellow stripe treatment as the H20-44? I'm guessing the H16-44 version of the H20-44 repaint would've had the same end stripe but on both ends. Did the H20-44 in the September, 1964 photo have red around the end stripe?

I look forward to learning more about the P&WV from such a great historical society.

...no red trim/strip on #70.
most likely, the Rook Shop men had a FM nose-stencil
near-by & a few left over red & black decal logos handy as well.
A another clue to what may have been:

most class 1 R.R."s during this time period were
also headed to more "simple paint schemes"
....NKP to more simple nose stripes.

Even without the red stripe the simplified paint scheme is nice yet simple. Maybe some modeler's license could be used to add some red striping around the front hood stripe, but I may have to debate doing that as simplification was the name of the game in the 60s and 70s. Did the P&WV Rook Yard reshop other FMs before 1964? If yes were they left in as delivered livery? By the way thanks for the links to other paint schemes including the alternative switcher scheme which could work as even a road diesel scheme in the 70s.

If I may throw my two cents in, I would guess that the geeps would have been painted and lettered like #70 but without the yellow on the nose. Masking curves takes time and time is money. If it were a factory paint job, the railings may have been black with yellow only at the steps. By 1970, I'd bet that the only yellow would have been the lettering, step faces and handrails at the steps and no circular logos.

All conjecture, but fun to consider...

I plan to use the FM #70 scheme for most second generation units but for units built closer to the 70s, I plan to simplify the scheme to reflect the trend of railroads in the region at that time.
