I finally pulled out my 42 inch scanner,
repaired it, hooked it up to a computer, got some software, calibrated it, and got it up and running.
I did some test scans of a few blueprints
I had and it worked just fine. Now Jer and I can start scanning some
of the many blueprints,
drawings and maps we have so we can post them.
It takes so little time when you have the right tools!!

JR's been working on serious tech-stuff behind the site curtains.
He has done a giant amount of work, about 75% completed.
We, JR/JZ/Gene/Eric/Dave/Ed. must now work on some kind of catalog
system to keep track of what will/was scanned, and how all archive
information is organized. Then the fun begins, actual scans of
the really massive P&WV collections.
Most items never seen.
Maps, drawings, Diagrams, blue-prints, images
etc. covering 1904-1965.
...to top things off JR/JZ are also getting organized to give the
P&WV Hi-Line a complete major image and web-site tech overhaul.
...be patient, a major task(s), not easy, nor quick.

While you're digging through maps, please keep an eye out for a branch that came off the main at Pryor (later known as Rea). In a deal with the Washington Coal Compny dated Sept. 1905, WCC was to construct a 3 mile branch paid for by bonds issued in the amount of $76,000 and WPT would pay for and assume control over it through shipment discounts. Less than $13K was paid when WPT went teats up. The line was washed out not long after completion and never rebuilt.
If I were to guess, the branch left the main at Pryor/Rea, went NE up the valley and possibly turned north toward Atlasburg in the vicinity of Atlasburg Rd. _________________ Eric Schlentner

OK... I did a bunch more digging and have come up with some assumptions. It appears that Jer is likely correct. Cedar Grove Mine was opened around 1904-1906 by Washington County Coal, later purchased by Carnegie Coal in 1912. You can make out remnants of a railroad grade from aerials of 1939 from Avella up to what is now Studa - tight turns, narrow valley, ripe for a washout. The Avella area map in the previous post states that it was a paper railroad but I now don't think that's true.
Sooooo.... My assumptions are that the ICC report is either in error, or, Pryor/Rea was the designated area Post Office before Avella got a PO. Stands to reason since I think the WPT was built from east to west through there. I did read in a transcript of an oral history that Rea was the PO for Cedar Grove. If the flood occurred in 1908 or earlier, that would also make sense since the line would have been out of service prior to the bankruptcy in 1908, thus the comments by the ICC that though money was owed, it was unlikely to be rebuilt. Also, I think PCC&StL reached Studa sometime before 1914 via the Langeloth Branch - 1914 is the earliest date I've found of it's existence so far but I'd guess it went in much earlier.
I think I have enough data to add it to the list though I wonder what they called it. For now, I'll call it the Cedar Grove Branch. _________________ Eric Schlentner

Bill P. as I recall his info.....,
" Prior was a Flag Station Stop just west of present Avella, also the area P.O.
Avella Station/P.O.came short-time after...
As the town grew, became a small-hub for Mining Co's/Banks
and community commercial center etc.
A new larger WPT Station (Pass. & Frt.) was needed & built.
All activity at Prior transferred/moved to now larger Avella proper."
Exact Dates for this ? We do have, someplace ? paper work copied from the
Avella Historical group, and A.D. White Foundation. |

Just so we don't get confused, Pryor, later known as Rea (MP 27.45) was the second flag stop EAST of Avella (MP 30.90). For reference, West Middletown (MP 29.00) was in between. _________________ Eric Schlentner

As I understand it,
Prior Flag Stop was always just Prior, Rea was not
mentioned in any relationship to, or conversations with the
current Avella Historical folks. |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as the A D White folks were having their meetings years ago of which I attended a few, it was my understanding Pryor was actually west of Avella, down towards Craighead. Isn't theire a few houses remaining down that way ? |

YAaa..your right, Gene
West -near the tunnel, think? JR and myself
tramped around that area looking again for any sign
of a small station foundation etc.
I think we have a B/W image from the D. Elder collection,
Will try go thru some stuff...
You plan to attend RPM-east thing?
Hi-Line has two tables for display.
When you get a chance, maybe dig through
the Ohio-stuff and choose a few things these scale model people would like.
JR/JZ will scan-print-mount
some 18 X 24" images. |

Pryor Coal Co. Avella No. 1 Mine was west of Avella. (MP 32.17). I'll have to dig back through all my files, but if I recall, the flag stop called Pryor was east of West Middletown at Rea during construction by WPT. Pryor family either owned or held the mining leases on various acreage in the area. I could be wrong, though. Certainly wouldn't be the first time. I'll check and post back. _________________ Eric Schlentner

WPT public timetable dated Oct 2, 1904 shows Pryor at MP30 (where Rea would be). This was at the time when Pittsburgh was MP0, not West Belt Jct. Woodrow was east at MP25.4. West Middleton was MP32.4. Avella didn't exist yet in the timetables.
Sometime during the WPT years Avella appeared in the tables and Pryor disappeared. Rea was still absent for a while after Pryor disapeared. It is interesting to note that both Avella and Rea, but not Pryor, are on the "1904" track chart in Howard's WPT book. But also note the lack of drawing and/or revision dates which leads one to assume that the drawing date is later than 1904.
After MP0 was moved to WB Jct and several later surveys, the MPs ended up as in my lists and the MP location known as Rea replaced Pryor. _________________ Eric Schlentner
