Well, at 12:01 am. this date the P&WV flag passed into R.R.
history. The NKP, Wabash, and to a lessor extent AC&Y as well.
These Alphabet Roads gave-up & lost quite a few of their
mainlines, branch lines, and in few cases entire operating
districts. These last 52 years much has changed.
However, Pittsburgh & West Virginia Railway's 131 mile
mainline and (Almost) all the Branch lines remain today.
At present, most under-going a major re-birth in traffic levels.
Oct 16, 2016, CWR mainline/traffic improvement project(s) Pittsburgh Jct, to C'ville.
Hopedale Transfer, Westland Branch, Bruceton Interchange, Clairton,
Monessen, Everson with traffic levels that sometimes rival 1964.
Although N&W/NS/WLE may not have been kind in some cases to the larger
System Districts, the "High & Dry", line rolls-on!
... the early 1990's dire predictions of demise & sale are but a short foot-note. |

I agree, as other lines have fallen by the wayside, The Pike and the Montour to name a couple, I'm glad the High and Dry continues to lives on. As you mentioned, it's not the P&WV I remember as a kid and in some places Mother nature has been allowed to encroach on the ROW, but at least the majority of the line is still in place and being used on a daily basis. Long live the P&WV. _________________ Regards,
