The late Larry Kline was very interested in, and somewhat of an expert
with Alphabet Route Car-Consist. The P&WV local movements in the early to mid-1950's caught his watch-full eye.
In conversations, shared notes, images , and information were always a topic of
interest. The Belt-Local, Mifflin Run, West-End Job,and the Bridgeville Turn.

Larry had a question(s) some years back concerning the G. E. Plant in
Bridgeville Pa. At the time the Hi-line had very little on this customer, other
than the P&WV serviced this Glass/Light bulb Plant location about 3-4 times a week in the 1950's.

Recent Archive Materials located show some interesting traffic & car patterns.

One I wished we could have shared with Larry...
ILDX cars , 70-ton Covered Hoppers Bill-Board Lettered for General Electric.

The P&WV serviced/shopped/painted many of these cars at Rook.
Official Car Shop Records:

ILDX Car # 320- blt.10/46 shopped and painted & re-stenciled 8/2/54 Rook Pa.
ILDX Car # 351 -blt. 10/51 " " " 8/17/54. "
ILDX Car # 322 -blt. 10/46 " " " 9/8/54. "
ILDX Car # 321 -blt. 1046 " " " 9/21/54 "

All above cars Painted one(1) coat red-primer, two(2) coats Gloss-Black
with White Reporting Marks and G. E Logo. @ Rook Shops.

Several other cars had received shop-work at Rook late 1954-55', however it's not clear at this time
if they were re-painted & stenciled as well.

Soooo... you scale modelers (N-HO-O) might want to add a few of these
to your car-consist.

Ahhaaaa...nice, what's the date?
Color slide ? Can you post on BB, or give us a Pic Link?

Think? one archived P&WV-General-Notice (Date-Late 50's?) has a diagram/Line drawing of the Plant track layout.
Now, the big issue is to start looking & find-it.....

Tom & others, notes/info for
scale model folks on Open Hoppers.

Betsy Mine & Mine lead....MP.99.
Lots of NKP, and NYC 70-ton hoppers
Later 1957-1960 the (mine owned) tipple/lead tracks, the P&WV
crews had to limit heavy loaded coal traffic cars due to very poor
track maintenance. Lots of P&WV channel & off-set 50-60 ton cars,
with a few B&O hoppers as well.
Same as above for the Hopedale Transfer MP.107, with no restrictions.

2-3 unit sets of P&WV FM's had their hands full with 50-60 car loaded
hoppers moving as Extra's both East and West on this section of the PGH Div.
Also, not un-common to see blocks of loaded ore placed ahead of
long strings of coal loads.

Ore traffic going to Rook-Clairton U.S. Gov. storage yard & local mills, and
Monessen MP21. Lots of NKP WM, B&O, P&WV, twin hoppers.

...for good measure , always add a few PRR cars, these seem to not show
in block movements but mixed-in singles.

Archives info from assorted bits P&WV Train sheets, Derailment reports,
Company General Notice's and Telegraphic reports.

I am looking for any information on Betsy Mine. I have a space for the mine but hoping some information comes about it.
A retired NYC engineer who now lives in Fl. used to work the Hopedale interchange. He told me about sending hoppers to the interchange also.
After I talked to him I now receive hoppers of coal for my Clairton Coke works. Thanks for the information.

Tom , Your in luck! Have uncovered 12(twelve) complete and
very detailed reports of derailments/operation incidents at Betsy Mine,
Hopedale Mine, and Hopedale Transfer. Dates from June 16, 1961 to
July 25, 1963.

....tiny sample from just 1(one) page.

" At 3:15 PM. April 5, 1963 Cond. D.F. Keller, Engineer G.K. Bradford
derailed west-pair of wheels-west truck of NKP 80779, all wheels of
both trucks of NKP 80454 and all wheels east truck of NKP 79991, empty hoppers, at the switch leading from No.1 to No.2 empty tracks at Betsy Mine.

P&WV Extra 57/52 was engaged in servicing the Betsy Mine, and
after filling No.1 empty track with empties, they were backing eastward
with 26 empties at a speed of 2mph in order to shove the 26 empties to No.
2 track.
When NKP 80779 the twenty-fourth car from the Engines left the rails
at No.2 track switch. This resulting in the derailment of the two cars,
NKP 89454 and NKP 79991, immediately following. NKP 80454 stopped, leaning at an angle of about 45 degrees.

Accident was caused by track failing under traffic, due to inadequate
maintenance.
Road-foreman of Engines. "

" 11:55 AM. July 24, 1961, P&WV Extra 64/91 Cond. D.P. Keller,

a load of coal, fifth car from the engines, at the frog between No.2 and No.3 loaded tracks Betsy Mine
Smithfield Ohio.
Extra 64/91 was engaged in servicing the Betsy Mine, and while
pulling 14 loads from No.3 loaded track at a speed of 2 mph. all wheels of west truck left the rails, due to a defective frog.

We will set-aside these reports, and as time permits look for the
maps & line diagrams Betsy/Hopedale.

Each of these 12-reports are 5-7 detailed pages.
...and wait till you read the report(s) on P&WV Caboose 829 at the Betsy.
