Can anyone explain the barrels on the access points along the bridge?

Always wondered what purpose they served.

One word Rich, Fire. Back in the days of steam locomotives, hot ashes and clinkers could fall onto the bridge ties starting a fire. Part of the job of the crew in the caboose was to look for fires started by the passing train.
