Hi Eric and group,
We are getting closer to an N scale H20-44. CMR / Puttman Locomotive Works has released an N scale H20-44 shell.

https://www.cmrproducts.com/n-scale-fairbanks-morse-h-20-44-road-switcher/

Not sure which N scale Frame you'd mount this on? I read someplace someone was going to try an Atlas N scale Baldwin VO-1000 frame and mechanism, not sure if this will work, but there are not a lot of options in N scale.

I'm not really up on this stuff but didn't Atlas make both an H16 and H24? Maybe you can modify the frames. At least you'd have the correct GSC Type B trucks. If you were really good, you could draw it up and have frames cast.

On the body, check a few posts up. It's close, but not correct for the off-the-shelf FM products.

Hi Eric,
Does the H16-44 and H20-44 share the same frame length? I was thinking the H20-44 was shorter than the H16-44? I believe that is why someone on one of the model railroad forums I follow, mentioned using the Atlas Baldwin VO-1000 because the frame lengths were similar. Since both locomotives are made by Atlas, you could probably drop H16-44 trucks into the VO-1000 frame?

Nope. The H15/16-44 is around 3' longer overall. I think the axel spacing on the Type B trucks is a little longer than the Type A, I'd have to check on that, so that's something to be aware of if you use the Baldwin frame. And, the truck centers on the Baldwin is much too close. Ref earlier post in this thread.

Oops, the earlier post was about the H10 frame, my bad. I'll look up the dimensions and post back.

H20-44:
Length: 51'
Truck centers: 36'-4"
Type B wheelbase: 9'-4"
42" wheels

VO-1000:
Length: 48'-10"
Truck centers: 30'-8"
Type A wheelbase: 8'-0"
40" wheels

H16-44:
Length: 54'
Truck centers: 39'-4"
Type B wheelbase: 9'-4"
42" wheels

The H10 and H12 were closer to the VO but both are different in length.

One more thing, just to reiterate....

IMHO, the CMR/Puttman/Big Dawg casting is pretty crude and the car body doors and louvers, to name some obvious things among others, are wrong.

Hi Eric, This all boils down to, where's your good enough line. Until a manufacturer makes an exact model, this is going to be a good enough stand in for me. My N scale rule is, if it looks like a reasonable example from 2 feet, it's good enough for me.

Yeah, I hear ya and second that. The same rule applies as 10' with classic car restoration or in my book, 50' in rail restorations.

...as I said to Jayrod,

these O-Scale beauty's have really "stood-the-time".
The late Great Larry K. had ((4) four units.
All re-powerd, up-dated, painted & detailed, The Car Works Brass.
I have drooled over his H-20-44's - many times.
