Hello Group,
I know that by the time the P&WV GP35's 100 and 101 were delivered, they came painted in N&W colors and were numbered 1300 and 1301. Does anyone know, if the merger hadn't taken place and the P&WV did not become part of the N&W, what paint scheme would the GP35's have worn? Would they have been painted like the FM H16-44R's / H20-44's or maybe like the Baldwin AS616 or since they were coming from EMD, would they have been painted like the proposed P&WV SW9's?
Regards,

Welcome to the Hi-Line board Rich.
Ahaaa....all the "what-if's/what might have beens..." The SW-9 & GP-35
stuff is really fun to talk & think about. Looking-thru some of the
Archives Materials, we may never know for sure what the P&WV future
map and operations would be. Or what
Motive-Power /Paint schemes /local traffic routes would look like.
(if the N&W merger plan failed)
My guess with the GP-35's, all black,
with some chrome yellow trim & reporting marks.
Maybe following the NKP/WM later, simple basic patterns.
CO. Archives do tell us this:
Future P&WV Alphabet Route Operations would indeed increase.
"Run-Thru" traffic/ trains/ power & crews, Brewster to Cumberland/Hagerstown MD.
would play a major part if the P&WV was to hang-on & survive.
...Failed N&W Plan and what may have been ???
What if a NKP/C&O plan(s) in 61'/62' had won-out?
Additional Alphabet routes partners may have included... C&O/Virginian routes to southern
connections. WM/B&O east, and NKP/WAB/DT&I going west?
N&W's hope if their merger plans failed, A Southern Railway partnership?
Post Oct. 1964 NKP's P&WV operations might have looked a bit like, AC&Y -ABB, (retaining it's own flag I.D.)
But with
ALL major route system traffic/operation patterns controlled by the NKP from Clevleland's Terminal Tower Home Office HQ???
Just some fun things to ponder. |

Hi PWVJer,
Thank you for the reply. I was just wondering if the P&WV had a paint scheme planned for the GP35's since they were to wear the numbers 100 and 101. I guess if they did, that information may now be lost to time :(
What ifs can be fun if you don't go to far over board. I've often wondered why the NKP and the P&WV didn't try to buy out B&O's portion of the WM's stock? A NKP + P&WV + WM, would have given them a route from Chicago and St Louis all the way to the ports of Baltimore without any outside influences. But I guess it's like the old saying, hindsight is 20/20.

Don't really know if GM/P&WV had a paint scheme in mind.
However, in a past Archive search we did find interesting
Co records & paper trails on the 50' Ddb. door box cars(#1500-1512),
these were leased from the NKP, at least 7 cars had DF loading racks
installed at Rook.
Also the 12+ or so 89' TTX flat (w/custom tie-downs for Auto Parts) cars leased in 6/64.
Twelve(12) new larger & Heavy Duty Frehauf Trailers purchased 7/64.
6 additional 89' TTX cars for trailer-train pool 7/64.
Color? Type of Reporting Marks? Car #'s? What happed to these after the N&W
take-over?
Still searching the Archive's for info....on all this stuff. |
