This past Sat. A.M.(June 11th.)the Hi-Line web-masters were the guests of the
Fayette Central Railroad. This is a tourist line operation based out of Uniontown Pa.
I must say...we were a bit skeptical and our expectations were a bit low as we drove to Uniontown.
But, we were very wrong! The owners and operators could not have been more hospitable and nicer.
The train ride was both a suprise and a complete delite!
These folks answered all of our questions and added much more information (past & present)
on the history of this line and it's current operations.
This small small group operates a professional and very well run train ride operation.
Might be one of the best kept railroad tourist line secrets in Western Pa.
We encourage all the Hi-Line fans to plan a visit, ride the "Sheep-Skin Line".
You will witness some interesting local railroad, coal & coke history.
The B&O/Chessie, PRR, West Penn Interurban, WM(Bowest), and the current
SWP/AVR operations are just some of the features
This SWP branchline now has almost all welded-rail, new ties, ballast, switches, passing sidings, and grade crossings.
The Frac-sand load outs, now number 3, with yet another being built. Future
Coal load-outs (like the Bullskin operation) and several other small shippers are planned.
New on-line rail custormer(s) business has a good out-look.
We rode the Uniontown-Dunbar-C'ville segment. As we passed by the ole' WM(Bowest) yard
the crew pointed out that this yard facility will soon rise again and be re-built!
Work was to have started this past April, but is in a short delay period due to all the Branch ROW work.
This planned Bowest Yard will be the new SWP/AVR hub, car sorting, loco power & office operations site.
This bit of news was passed to us by the FC R.R. owners & operators(Crew).
Verified by a long-time and current CSX employee who was also on board our trip.
Again, Hi-Line fans...lets help support these folks, plan to make one of these week-end train rides.
Both a pleasant and fun railfan day.
BTW, also one of the very best "family-friendly" train rides!
JR has a bunch of images & other stuff from our Fayette Central visit.
Watch for the current era trip image up-date comming soon!

A big "Thank You" to all the nice people who operate the Fayette Central Railroad!!!

Well, maybe this week-end we can finish some site up-date material.
Many more summer family activities yet to cross-off.
Yough river canoe, Kennywood, Cedar-Point and a Elkins W.Va.(Cass) or East Broad Top.
With all or some of the 8, very active grand-kids in tow.
...for all you Hi-Line fans thinking about "your" retirement days, remember this:
"Life's journey is not to arrive safely at the grave in a well preserved body. But,
rather to skid-in sideways totally out of control, worn-out & shouting,
Holy shit...What a Ride!!!!

JR's FC R.R. image story is now up in the current-era images page.
BTW, when the W&LE sent the two(2) GP-35's over to the SWP/AVR one of the assigments.... a trip to Uniontown.
These two units were the power that returned the B&O RDC Budd-car back to C'ville CSX yard.
CSX to complete the Budd car's trip back to the B&O Museum.
Any Images & Pics of this rare move...????? |
