Here are some shots of the newest W&LE equipment on the old P&WV line. Shots are of all the new equipment including the P.O. Number. The detector is located about 25 yards west of the Avella station.
Enjoy....

Hot Box Detector
UNIVERSAL MOUNTING
VOICE REPORTING
EXPANDED DATA STORAGE
The Sentry System is a full-featured detection and reporting system. It monitors moving trains, providing real-time detection of overheated bearings and overheated wheels. It monitors trains traveling from 5 to 90 mph (8 to 145 kph). It also monitors trains heading in either direction on the track.
The Sentry System uses two types of scanners. One type scans the temperature of axle bearings. The other scans the temperature of wheels. Except for the addition of an attenuation bracket on the wheel scanner, both types are identical and can be used interchangeably. However, each type is mounted on the rail differently.
Within each scanner is a sensor that measures change in the amount of infrared radiation emanating from the point at which it is aimed. This signal is converted to a digital value and compared to a stored value. If the new value is greater than the stored value an alarm is generated.
Defects are reported via the road channel. Radio messages consist of a set of predefined spoken messages triggered by a particular event or set of events. Real-time messages consist of announcements that occur as the train is passing over the site.

The original Hickory HBD also had 2 devices for detecting loose wheels.
I did not see this feature at Avella :?: |
