This past Saturday, April 21, I spent a wonderful day riding the rails of
the Everett Railroad outside Altoona on former Monongahela Railway
motorcar #39.
MRY 39 is actually a former Monongahela Railway maintenance of way
gang car that Don, Ray, Gary and Butch acquired a number of years ago.
MRY 39 is capable of carrying 5 men, has a 4 cylinder motor, and if I
remember correctly has a 4 speed manual transmission.
This is my second trip on MRY 39.
A few years ago, I rode with Don, Gary, Ray and Butch on the former
Western Maryland between Ridgley and Frostburg on the "scenic" railroad,
which included two trips around Helmsteddars Curve!
Our trip last Saturday began at Claysville(?) on the Everett RR.
From Claysville on the Everett we headed for Holidaysburg, turned
and reversed directions taking another former PRR Branch up through
Roaring Springs to Martinsburg Junction.
At Martinsburg Jct. we turned on the wye, again reversed directions
and back to Holidaysburg, turned again using a road
crossing then back to Claysville.
For the most part Saturdays trip was on my favorite, jointed rail. I had
originally thought we were riding on 90 pound rail, but inspections at 2
locations determined we were actually riding on 100 pound jointed rail
that dates back to the early 1900's.
The trip on the Everett was rough.
The jointed rail was not maintanined well.
On a number of occasions I thought for sure we were gonna derail even
though some of those occasions we were on tangents.
Many of the track joints were low and out of alignment and we danced
side to side more often than I can remember.
The trip up through Roaring Springs on a second branch was wonderful.
A lengthy uphill grade passing a concrete plant complete with their own
quarry...past a working paper mill to the station at Roaring Springs.

A former PRR caboose is on display and a actualy Semaphore signal at the
station where box lunches were served.
(Someone forgot to order me one - Far be it for me to Complain(lol!)
This trip consisted of 35 motorcars...or should I say, 34 motorcars and 1
suburban hi-railer. (The guys in the hi-railer were really roughing it!)
There were several neat paint schemes in Saturdays motorcar consist.
From our Monongahela Railway 39, to the Reading Bee-Line, a orange
CN - Beaver car, a Chessie System car, a Ann Arbor, 2 Western Maryland
cars with speed lettering and fireball paint schemes, a PRR Panhandle car.
Our trip Saturday was in beautiful weather with warm temperatures and
nothing but sunshine.
As time permits, I will pass along additional images of Saturdays trip.
