Well, the connection is just about done. The WLE and AVR
tracks are connected. The ballast was put down on the AVR line
and the track alignment equipment was doing its job.
The other switch at the AVR end has a stub at this point.
However, we were told that this will be a run around siding
that will soon be laid to the Whitehall Tunnel. Does anyone
know what type and quantity of traffic we will see? Coal would
be a likely guesstimation. It is rumored that Consol will open
a mine in the Avella area on the WE. The AVR, perhaps, will
move the coal from the 84 mine which is at the end of track in Washington, Pa.

84 Mine is NOT located at the end of the branch in Washington. It is located on Norfolk Southern's (PRR) Ellsworth Branch.

84 Mine is the former Bethlehem Mine #60

I heard that rumor too about a mine going in around Avella.I'll believe it when I see it. Thanks for the pics on the Bruceton connection.

Great pictures of the Bruceton interchange! I've been following each new posting and it's great to see it in operation now.

The 84 Mine might not be on the W&P, but the biggest reason that CSX left the tracks in as far they did on the W&P, is because of hope that there might someday be another mine on the line.

Well, Consol's Enlow Fork mine is expanding. Check out this article:

http://observer-reporter.com/main.asp?Search=1&ArticleID=23634&SectionID=6&SubSectionID=15&S=1

Quote:
The mine's current permit consists of 26,627 underground acres and 488 surface acres. The expansion will take the mine's boundaries to within two miles of Interstate 70 and Route 18 in Prosperity, and one mile to Claysville.

The W&P used to run right through Claysville, but the tracks no longer go that far. I bet a mine load-out could change that....

I figured CSX left the 'Pike" in as far as they did hoping to get some future coal traffic. As soon as NS and Consol announced that NS would be building the new line to the Enlow Fork loadout, CSX leased the Pike to the AVR.
But I think that if coal production and demand continue to rise that the W&LE could become a player in Western PA.
