JR/JZ You were right about the coke train, I just drove by Mifflin looks like about 80 loads mostly B&LE with a couple WEand LEF&C Hoppers.

Were all of the 118 coke hoppers out of Mifflin or was this the total number when added with the Monessen coke?Or possibly the Union brought in more coke over night. As of Yesterday afternoon there was only one cut of cars at Mifflin on track 4. If all 118 came out of Mifflin that would be a record.Did anyone see what power was brought in to pull the train out this morning? |

118 loads out of MIFFLIN.
Originally, 121 loads were expected.
The track of coke in your photo had 66 loads, give or take 1 or 2.
There were 2 additional tracks of coke adjacent to your photo Monday AM.
Power was 7375-tunnel motor and 103.
No pick up out of Rook.
Record ... (perhaps)... for coke.
But NS and the Wheeling ran many Duquense Wharf coal trains
westbound out of Mifflin years ago. Typically these were 125 car trains.
When the Wheeling ran the coal trains, the SD-45 slug sets along with 2
GP-35's were power...or 3 six's and 2 fours...
And...the train of pipe westbound out of Mifflin in the very early 1990's.
I believe the Wheeling delivered 125 SOUTHERN gondolas to Mifflin for this train.
Gondolas were stored in Gladden siding before going to Mifflin.
I have a photo of this long train of SOUTHERN gons westbound at Longview loaded high wih pipe...W&LE era... |

Thanks for clearing that up for me.I would liked to to have been there to see the Union and the W&LE working the yard with the three cuts of cars in it. I have lived along the Mifflin branch for 42 years now and have seen all kinds of different freight and power, almost anything that could be shipped by rail has come thru here. You could write a book on it "THE MIFFLIN BRANCH 100 YEARS OLD" . It has been a pretty good year so far with the scrap and coke I would like to see the steel and coal make a come back. |
