Monessen passing siding in older timetables is reflected as a 2668 foot long
passing siding that sometime in the late 60's was changed to make it over
a mile in length. My question(s);
1) - From the old crossover just east of the station up to the East End, was
this trackage always there but not used as part of the passing siding?
2) - If so, was the trackage from the old crossover part of the P&WV / N&W
or was this MSW trackage?
3) - I know the current connection to the MSW off Monessen Siding was not
the original connection as the original connection was much further west
what year was Monessen Yard built? It seems as if a lot of steel mill
waste was dumped between the P&WV main and I-70, I almost have a
feeling that much of the yard was built as the MSW dumped slag to
support it ? |

If I were to guess, and don't take this to the bank, I think that the "extension" of the passing track utilized one of the ex-yard tracks. When that happened, I don't know. Everything was still in place in 1967 per Penn Pilot. The yard was built on fill east of the Rostraver Rd bridges with a connection to PWV on the east end and another connection to PWV west of the bridges which is now the current connection. Also of interest, the MSW track over the PWV from the yard to the slag dump were still in service in 1967. The PWV wye just west of the bridges was still in place in 1956 but was removed sometime between then and 1967. _________________ Eric Schlentner

The MSW dump track that went up & across the P&WV west of the station was in use in the mid 1970's as I have a "so-so" photo of a MSW crew returning, light engine. I'm now wondering where the P&WV and MSW interchanged before Monessen Yard was built ? Was the east end of the siding used as interchange before the yard was built ? When was the MSW bridge over 201 built as that trackage went directly into Monessen Yard ? Or, was there the east end of the siding and perhaps just one yard track in use way back then ? |

The wye at Monessen remained in service until early 1970,when a derailment on the main track took out west leg of wye and west leg was never put back in service. The east leg remained in service for a while thereafter.

Per the 1956 areal view which is the sharpest old one, it looks like there were four yard tracks plus a run-around on the south side. The northern-most yard track is now the extended siding with the western switch to MSW just west of the bridge right where the dump track took off. I assume the current siding is also used as the interchange so that would negate that portion's use as a passing siding unless interchange is almost nil.
The wye was not there in 1938. However, it is there in 1956.

Four(4) large 24" X 60" drawing/diagrams showing MSW and P&WV track & ROW....
P&WV RY. CO. Office of Chief Engineer April 5, 1949 and March 1, 1950.
Dave (WM Historian) has repaired/restored/returned, show the answers to
the many questions asked in below posts.
We can now better study & view/understand these drawings/diagrams that
show in detail the MSW railway ROW, P McK Railway branch,
(including the Victoria and Sommer's Mine ROW) and the P&WV Monessen interchange ROW.
BTW, Gene your guess/thoughts about the Monessen Yard may be correct.
All the P&WV and MSW bridge built dates show July 14, 1930 -to- Dec 29,
1932. Match the dates for private property bought by the MSW Railway.
Plans for a future inter-change yard location? That one day would be indeed developed.
Think ??? the major additional fill work may have started about 1938?
A complete " Schedule of Property " is included on map page one(1).
The amount of information in these four(4) maps/diagrams is rare
and interesting! |

Hey GPS, ...found!!!
File ( 33-133-6-56 ) Office of P&WV Chief Engineer
Construction of MSW Ry. Connection Extension of Westerly End of passing track
and relocation of MSW Ry. Connection at Station 1002+72 East End.
Complete original AFR/AFE, P&WV notes & letters, and a fantastic
Map/Diagram/Drawing Jan. 1932 and Revised Jan 21, 1935.
Drawing show the new Inter-change yard. P&WV Main Line and
Passing track, and the switch locations East & West to access
the new MSW interchange. Only two(2) tracks at this time,
receiving & out-bound.
Interesting includes the first inter-change connection switch
(P&WV owned) with the MSW Ry. at p.s.988+184 #10. West of the
soon to be built Monessen Station & future MSW ROW dump spur bridge.
This complete file/reports ( Sept. 25, 1934 to Feb 15, 1935 ) is in near pristine condition ! |
