As of this date, this has been observed. Very heavy amounts of new ballast has been spread-down
from the (NS-Connection)Clairton Grade X-ing to just beyond MP.2
towards Pierce connection.
Nice well-tamped, surfaced & groomed branch ROW, re-newed yard interchange looks almost complete.
(W&LE long & heavy ballast train) came in the URR connection at West Mifflin,
took the Union R.R. route down to the Clairton Yard connection then shove/pull working the branch.
Some additional CWR to replace older stick rail sections at some future date.
Several pieces of MOW track equipment is still staged at the Rt. 51 crossing
and stub switch at Large Pa.
Peters creek bridge re-hab work almost complete. Some speculation & guess....
The new long span, that will
replace the old truss-style structure may be in place by the end of July.???
Bridge-span, type & kind maybe???
...Modified Pony Plate Bridge. A design method of increasing a girder's load capacity while minimizing its web depth adding haunches
at the supported ends. Usually the center section is a standard shape with parallel flanges;
curved or angled flanged ends riveted /bolted using splice plates. Because of the restrictions incurred in transporting large beams
to the construction site, shorter, more manageable lengths are often joined on-site using splice plates.
Also of note: The six(6) all steel viaduct sections were also removed. These were lowered on large timber work decks at ground level.
Bridge & Iron workers then repaired and replaced all the worn/defective
steel. As each section was re-paired/rebuilt and complete inspection, they were again replaced back to their original positions.
I guess fans will all know the complete correct traffic & ROW & bridge design answers in a month or so...

...for those astute Hi-Line fans who asked/e-mailed.
Yes, the hard curve going up that 3%??? grade is indeed all steel-ties.
-- Grade Crossing to about 1st.Switch at the WLE Clairton Yard proper. --
Heavy 6-ax. power, both NS/WLE no restrictions. Branch or Yard.
Additional State St. Crossing/approach work, both the WLE and NS
sides have not been total completed yet.
Auto-Oiler at about MP 2, just before going into the curve & deep-cut on the Branch.
Maybe GPS can add or correct, this is all we know/observed..... |

That's a lot of bucks spent so far on what looks like Class 2 track plus the new bridge work. Hoowee! Just for us to pin together 1,000' of exempt track with some relay ties and a bit of ballast cost us an ungodly sum. Their gonna need a huge amount of billable traffic to amortize this expenditure. Wow. _________________ Eric Schlentner

Yep e-man, lots of new traffic.
The WE does not spend/invest big buck$ because a few folks like to
watch the trains & take some hobby pics.
These images show only a fraction of the work and improvements to
the ROW-bridge and yard area.
The hint as to what traffic is about to transpire is on the
yellow gate.
Lots of no trespassing, gates, fences etc. portents of things to come.
The nice quite & still early A.M. nature strolls down a little used 5-mile
branch line may be a memory. |
