Well, the old P&WV designed Cantilever Bridge section over the road & bike/walking trail,
is gone! Cut into small sections then lowered to the hi-way-road base.
Road & trail surface was completely covered/protected with very large & heavy wood deck-beams.
These steel pieces were again burned/cut into yet smaller sections and hauled away for scrap in heavy dump trucks.
Work will begin at once to repair/replace the concrete/cement
Northwest approach. Not sure what type of new span will replace the
now removed Cantilever section.
At the same time frame, work continues on complete repair of the remaining
Viaduct and Structural Supports for Sections #4, 3 and 2.
Sections
#8, 7, 6, 5 have been completely rebuilt/repaired/replaced and re-assembled.
This entire bridge project as of this date, has been image (Nikon) recorded.

The Peters Creek through truss bridge on the Clairton Branch came down Wednesday January 13, 2016 a day later than originally planned.
It was estimated 300,000 pounds of steel was removed leaving about another 300,000 pounds still on piers.
Two LOMMA cranes were brought in Monday January 11th with a planned Tuesday lift, however on Tuesday, during the snow squalls,
there was not enough counter weight on the cranes thus delaying the removal until Wednesday.
I later found out on Tuesday that one of the cranes had 126,000 pounds of bridge weight on its boom
during the initial lift but the cranes only had somewhere around 80,000 pounds of counter weight,
so the bridge was set back onto its piers until Wednesday when additional counter weight arrived.
Maybe Jer can add the images I emailed him ?

Well, how about those wonderful images GPS set us?
Great Job Gene! we could not get down to the site early
Wed/Thurs. but you got it well covered.
Now, Hi Line fans, all the talk-talk related to the Clairton Branch.
Here is something to think about.
"More than half of the U.S. LNG products is destined for European
Markets."
"The U.S.is forecast to ship about 55 percent of its total LNG production, or 32 million metric tons a year, to Europe." One reason is this:
Europe is close, has ample Port Capacity, with very large Liquid Markets.
The U.S. will dispatch its first new LGN Tankers along with the
many European registered ships/carriers.
This is just the start of a wave of export projects resulting from the
nation's shale-gas-boom!.
(Info from U.S. Business Report ,NY Times. PG local paper.)
Now, does anyone think that the WLE would spent 1 million $$$ on
repair/rebuild of an old Branch line Bridge? ...and additional 1 million +,
on a little used 4.5 mile connecting ROW to move a few Coke-loads/scrap/frack-sand and
misc. loads/mty's?
(and not discuss(for now),into what's in store for the P&WV's
Mainlines both East and West!)
...a bit of speculation,
Hopedale & Westland, will continue to play a major roll
in producing/shipping the many New LNG products for both Domestic
and export.
Less chaotic/busy/ populated area Routes for these LNG products.
WLE-Hopedale-Westland 40-car blocks to Clairton. NS direct
pick-up @ Mon-Line to Port Perry then hot-shot East to NY/NJ
LNG Ports?
WLE direct to CSX @ Hagerstown, Ports for Mid-Atlantic & Southern
export loading?
Both Load/mty exchanges?
...just our thoughts, what do you Hi Line fans think or want to add ? |

I always thought that was a pretty light bridge. I wonder if it was iron, not steel. You don't see a lot of fully pin-connected trusses anymore. Most of 'em are oldies. _________________ Eric Schlentner

Thank you Jim for putting the images up...
Its my understanding the G&W is also building a new right of way into Hanna to serve the plant.
The G&W like the P&WV is right next door.
How this will impact shipments over the P&WV should be interesting.
I'm sure all of this will depend on service and rates.
I'd love to see the W&LE take loads directly to NS at Hagerstown.
I'd personally beg for employment so I could bid on that job.
But I honestly don't see this ever happening again. |

The ex-PRR Cadiz branch runs through the west side of the processing plant.
The branch was part of the Panhandle that G&W leases from the state and it passes over Hanna tunnel.
Last I saw, all the loading racks are on the south side of the plant on the Wheeling which is at a much lower elevation
but there was a large cleared area next to G&W.
They could be or have built another loading rack and yard. _________________ Eric Schlentner

...HMmm thanks E-Man. Have not been out that way for about 2 years.
Anyway you or some other Ohio fan could/can/might get some current
images. and maybe post on the BB?
We do see the WLE at Bruceton Interchange drop & pick-up long
blocks (loads-mty's) tank cars/general frieght. Most headed via AVR to Island Ave. a small NS yard.
However, some WLE- AVR traffic is moving north (NY. Southern tier) up the P&W ex. B&O line to interchange
with the (G&W Industries) Buffalo & Pittsburgh R.R.
Lots of tank-cars, misc. freight and
some Coke moves. Nice views of these AVR trains along State Rt, 8 north.
Some images out on the net sometimes show a mix of WLE-AVR-B&P
run thru power. |

It's very unlikely I'll get down that way for photos. The good news is that Google Earth has updated their images to August 2015 (from 2012).
Search Google Earth for Hopedale, OH - the plant is just to the west. This is about the same time frame as the press release images I saw.
I don't know if there is a loading rack on G&W now. Might be able to find more info with a web search. _________________ Eric Schlentner

Almost forgot to add.... The Cadiz plant does load on the G&W -on Google Earth,
follow the line south from the Hopedale plant and you'll see the Cadiz plant.
The line is out of service from Cadiz south
as the only other customer is a small coal loadout between Hopedale and Cadiz. _________________ Eric Schlentner
