Does anyone know when the Acme prep plant outside Avella was built and when it was torn down?

Thanks

Early rumblings of the proposed facility.

Not sure of the exact date but here is a hint for the opening.

Thanks Rich. With the Post Gazette snippet, I was able to verify the date in a Coal Age article for new facilities built in 1933.

The second half of the question remains: Does anyone have any idea about when the Acme plant tipple was torn down? I've run across some info that alludes to it still standing into the early 80's???

Thanks

Just viewed this Color Video Tape (5:18seconds) of the Avella Plant late Spring/early- Summer? 1968.
Show the tipple & related close-by structures & yard area.
By this date, it looks over-grown & very worn-like, the end is near, (reason for making the tape?)
the N&W's scrapping & demo process may have started late fall of 68'.
Completion date ????

...will try to put this up on you-tube & decide for yourself.
some neat visual info for the P&WV model R.R. folks to glean over.

Looking at historicaerials.com, in 1969 the tipple and a few other buildings were still there. The plant may still be operational as there are quite a few empty hoppers in the yard, but nothing on the tipple tracks. I've heard that they were sporadically running the plant into the early seventies but I haven't been able to verify that or when the plant was finally torn down. I get asked those questions occasionally by some of our members and riders.
