Chased one coming from the east and was able to get some decent shots at a few spots. We saw several rail fans doing the same. One rail fan had a good vantage perched high on a hill near Horning.
Does anyone know what time they finally went west with the coke train?

Enjoy

The first 5 shots are at (the late) Dennis E. Malachowski's favorate location to shot P&WV FMs in the 1950's. Many, many changes since then!
Enjoy, MP 50 Oak. |

|

Around 1:15 on Friday Afternoon, Nov. 25, units 301 and 303 pulled a long string of empties into Rook from the west. Bringing up the rear of the consist, interestingley, were 14 loaded hoppers; these were snow-covered though, and we couldn't tell what was in them. Our guess was coal - maybe this went to the SWP?
Already in the yard was an idling 302 on the head end of a number of loads ready to head west.
The power of the (mostly) empty train that arrived was cut off and run around to the rear. 301 was coupled onto the rear, after which 303 ran up to the yard office. By now, it was 2:15, and we waited a while longer, but no action followed.
Around Noon on Saturday the 26th, 301 and 303 were found heading west through Bruceton with three covered hoppers and the coke. After chasing the train into Rook (where it arrived shortly after 1:00), we found two new arrivals to the yard - 3034 and PWV 101.
A few hours later, the coke loads that were behind the 302 were now coupled onto the new arrivals from Monessen, along with the covered hoppers on the rear. We got ready to chase this westward movement out of Rook, but a quick talk with one of the crew changed our plans. Around 5:00, they were due to head back east for more coke loads, and the train we'd been waiting for wasn't going anywhere until around 9:00 that night.
But it was a fun weekend railfanning the old 'high and dry.'
