The P&WV Hi-Line

Hello Group, On another web site some one ask me about a photo from the book "Fairbanks Morse Locomotives in color" by Jim Boyd.

Here is the question: "In the book Fairbanks morse locomotives in color by Jim Boyd page 78 has some pictures of P&WV H20-44 and H16-44 and lists the colors as dazzling black, cream and red livery"

Did a cream and black scheme exist or did Jim Boyd miss the boat on this one?

The info in Boyd's FM book, with the tan color suggestion is completely false.
No P&WV FM's were EVER painted tan. At that time, his(and others)research
were based on some very poor color print/slide images.
The best and correct color (Builder Photo) is
in the latest Hi-Line up-date.
Jayrod's extensive P&WV graphic & color project is the best & most accurate!

The yellow was DuPont 93-6808 which is really close to the federal standard "school bus yellow" and the red was 93-1863R which is kinda like a signal red but little darker. The yellow would weather to a lighter shade due to the oxidation of the red pigment in it as well as chalking since they didn't shoot clear coats or have good UV inhibitors (if any) back then. Old, weathered paint could look like a cream color. Black was just a run of the mill black. We don't have an "official" color code for that yet. Most likely whatever they had the most of at the time.

A bit more info. The black was most likely DuPont 93-005 or Ditzler 9000. These were somewhat standard, off the shelf colors at the time, same with the chrome yellow and red, mostly used on commercial vehicles from the mid thirties through the mid fifties. P&WV did not have proprietary colors like PCo and some other Class 1s.
