I bet there is not too many Rail Fans know when it was built and for what
purpose it was built for.
It was built right after the second World War when Detroit started building automobiles again. The Chevy dealer in Carnegie Uloaded there new cars here out of box cars labeled for automobiles. As a young boy about 12,I watched for hours the men jocking these cars onto the small ramp, these cars had no power steering or automatic transmissions.I think the Chevy dealers name was Holland.
The Ramp was built by the Carpenter Gang out of used bridge ties and other treated lumber just west of Rook Station and still stands there after all these years.
You can see the PWV was in the auto unloading business long before the NW started unloading Fords in 1965 on a larger scale.

Yep! I think we have what may be an old pic of this un-loading action at Rook.
Really Great Auto Show Pics from "inside" the Wabash Station as well.
I know we will have a pic and story of the P&WV un-loading @ Rook, brand new 1959 Chevy Corvetts
from a NKP auto box. Fans will see and read about this event in a future Hi-Line up-date.

There was a loading dock in Bridgeville, that sounds like the one at Rook. I watched them unload '59 Chevys one day. As a kid though I had better things to do most of the time. |
