The development of this new type car enables the railroad to compete more effectively with motor carriers for this type of steel tonnage. The car is still on an experimental basis and is being carefully tested. When proved satisfactory, we will equip sufficient additional cars to meet our requirements.

" Piggy Back" Trailer on flat car service was inaugurated between the Philadelphia-Baltimore area and Chicago and St. Louis in January 1955. Since that time the operation has been expanded to additional points. The freight has been handled in railroad-owned equipment only, and at the present time your Company has furnished five trailers and flat cars as our pro rata share of the equipment necessary for this operation. Traffic handled by The Pittsburgh & West Virginia has increased from 86 trailers in the first quarter of 1955 to 241 in the last quarter, an increase of more than 180 per cent.

All of our trailer or "Piggy Back" transportation so far has been in overhead service for we do not have, at the present time, any arrangements for handling "Piggy Back" into or out of the Pittsburgh area. However, studies are presently being made to determine both the availability and desirability of this type of originating and terminating traffic. Should these studies show conclusively a sufficient and profitable traffic potential, we will arrange to put such service into operation.
